Air Filter Replacement
The air filter in the 944 S2 is a real treat. The good news is two-fold:
1. It doesn't have to be changed that often.
2. It is a nice cold-air/ ram-air setup from the factory that surely aids performance.
The bad news is also two-fold.
1. It is a royal pain in the butt to change. (for an air filter, at least)
2. The factory replacement is about $30.
Obviously, you are looking at this page because you want to change your air filter. I would recommend doing a K&N setup like I did this winter. It only cost me about $50 and performs better than the stock airbox. See my modifications page for the details. However, if you just want to put a new factory filter in, here is the procedure.
1. Put a cold beer in the fridge. You'll need it after changing the filter, and isn't that the correct first step for any repair job ?
2. The air filter resides underneath the front nose piece of the car (with the emblem). It is fed by the top central air slot in the nose. Start by removing the the 5 screws that hold the back of the nose piece down.
3. Raise the headlights, then turn the knob to the parking light position. Disconnect the battery at this time.
4. Remove the rubber seals for the headlights. They just pull out. LABEL THE SEALS WITH TAPE. These seals can get confusing to reinstall if you don't label the orientation and side that they came from.
5. Remove the 4 bolts that are screwed vertically into the frame of the car. (2 per side) Next, remove the 2 bolts (1 per side) that screw horizontally into the fenders of the car. They are 10 mm and are hard to see, but they are there, believe me. Finally, remove the screws that screw horizontally into the middle of the nose piece.
6. CAREFULLY slide the nose piece straight off of the front of the car. The nose piece should slide out horizontally straight toward you as you stand in front of the car.
7. The filter box is held together by three spring clip fasteners. If you can't figure this out, you shouldn't have tried to do this repair in the first place.
8. Install the new filter, ensuring that you get the flow arrow in the right direction, and reverse the procedure to reinstall.
9. Go to the fridge, grab the brewski and marvell at this bit of German Engineering.
